These days I think <strong>we all<\/strong> often find ourselves <strong>alone<\/strong> while <strong>among others<\/strong> because of our devices, and we don&#8217;t know how to make it better. So here is my first attempt at some guiding principles for how we might manage our devices in social settings. Please read the suggestions, think it through, and help refine, improve or maybe replace the list. Perhaps together we can find a a way to find each other again, in spite of our devices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Device Etiquette<\/strong>, draft one<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put devices away during shared meals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During conversation, disregard your device. Concentrate on the person who is present.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you still feel the need to consult your device during a conversation, explain and ask permission of the other person.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t assume the other person wants to see your photos; ask.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If someone else hands you a phone to look at a photo, don\u2019t swipe further without permission.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In public settings, leave your ringer off.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In focused public settings (i.e., concerts, church, meetings, movies), turn your phone off.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While walking in public, keep your eyes on your path, not on your phone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In social settings, put your earbuds away. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I want to work\u00a0with you on some rules of device etiquette.
