Okay, this one blew me away. The newer versions of Apple Logic Pro (running on Apple silicon) have a “Stem” feature, which will take an existing recording and extract separate tracks from the mixed recording. The feature extracts these categories of the recording: drums, bass, guitars, keyboards, vocals, and “other”. It does not break out, for example, individual guitars if there are more than one. Interestingly, when it extracts the parts, it creates the component track in a stereo field.
I took one of the Shellback Rose recordings of “Since You’ve Been Gone”, which I believe was done on a stereo cassette recorder, and ran it through the process. Here is the original recording, the extracted stems, and a new (very rough) mix. All the recordings are of the same segment of the song.
