I highly recommend the outstanding trainings and tutorials at the WordPress.org site (Important: WordPress.org and WordPress.com are two separate and distinct sites). There are a number of courses that combine videos, exercises and quizzes to help you learn and understand the workings of WordPress. The lessons are well organized and presented.
